Special Exploratory Research Grant Calls

PEDL is launching a special call for proposals for scholars based in low-income countries

Applications are now closed.

The Private Enterprise Development in Low-Income Countries (PEDL) research programme invites applications from researchers based in Low-Income Countries (LICs) to a special call of its Exploratory Grants Programme.

PEDL invites applications in any aspect of private sector development, with a particular emphasis on PEDL’s priority research areas:

1) Market frictions, management and organizations

2) Trade and macro models - agglomeration and spatial location of firms

3) High growth entrepreneurship

4) Social compliance and the environment

We also encourage proposals which address one or more of three cross-cutting themes – (1) gender; (2) fragile and conflict-affected states;  and (3) unlocking data for understanding markets and firms.

Recipients of grants under this call will be expected to participate in a 5-day training course to be held in the UK in December 2017, and will be invited to other workshop and conference events over the coming three years. Through these events and links with established scholars, PEDL will provide feedback and support at all stages of the project.

The objective of PEDL is to fund cutting-edge, policy-oriented research that will be published in leading academic journals and enter the policy dialogue in low-income countries. Applications will be assessed on the basis of these criteria.

We expect to fund as many as 5 grants for amounts up to £35,000.

Note: This a Special Call for proposals from scholars based in Low-Income Countries. For this Special Call, all Principal Investigators and senior collaborating researchers must be based in Low-Income Countries. Please see the list of LICs here.

Please note that South Sudan also counts as an eligible LIC.

Also note that young scholars are encouraged to include a letter for support from an advisor or senior colleague.

Application deadline: 25 September 2017 (CLOSED).
