Matthew Pecenco is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics at Brown University. His research interests are in development and labor economics. He holds a PhD from the University of California, Berkeley.

Many workers are evaluated on their ability to engage with customers. We measure the impact of gender-based customer discrimination on the productivity of online sales agents working across Sub-Saharan Africa.

Do customers discriminate between workers? This work returns to this long-standing question by asking what role customers play in gender-based discrimination in labour markets in low-income countries.
