Raul Sanchez de la Sierra is an assistant professor at the Haas School of Business, University of California Berkeley. He is also an Azrieli Global Scholar at thr Canadian Institute for Advanced Research, a Center for Effective Global Action (CEGA) Faculty Affiliate and an International Growth Centre (IGC) Faculty Affiliate. His work covers Development Economics, Political Economy, Conflict, Taxation.

He has a Ph.D. in Economics from Columbia University, an M.Sc. in Development Economics from Sciences-Po, Paris and a B.Sc. in Economics  from Carlos III Madrid; Ludwig-Maximilians Universitaet Munich.

Researcher's Grant Projects

This project exploits a relationship built by the researcher with a large scale armed organization to examine the causes of voluntary recruitment and the trajectories in the organization of individuals who joined as a response to different shocks.

Building on previous exploratory work, this study utilizes data from conflict-affected Eastern Congo to examine the formation of ‘states’ by armed groups, their taxation activities, and policies aimed at reducing their state capacity.
