This paper examines whether globalization promotes female empowerment by improving the job opportunities available to women. Previous work has documented that exporting causally improved working conditiosn at predominationly female garment factories in Myanmar.

Kapteyn and Wah (2016) conducted a field survey of owners of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Yangon, Myanmar to investigate obstacles to business development in the region. The analysis focuses on access to credit, public services, and electricity.

Data collected in Myanmar garment and processed food firms from 2013 to 2015 provide evidence that exporting has positive effects on fire safety and the other measures of working conditions.
