Firm Culture: How Social Norms Affect Gender Bias in Hiring in Online Labour Markets

Social norms that shape expectations of women’s roles within groups can cause gender inequality in employment to persist, even in high information environments. We test this hypothesis using new data from the largest online job platform in Nigeria.

Job vacancies and hiring by large employers in Bangladesh

In this project, the research team conducts surveys of approximately 2,200 HR managers at garment factories in Gazipur, Savar, and Narayanganj, the three major garments-producing clusters around peri-urban Dhaka, to create a novel set of stylized facts about vacancies and hiring practices across firms and within firms over time.
